Boerum Hill is the type of neighborhood where residents are happy to get involved. This isn’t a recent phenomenon — the Boerum Hill Association was formed in the 1960s. To this day, the association works to strengthen and advocate for its community. It holds events like a free annual Holiday Party and the widely-known biannual Boerum Hill House Tour (which is coming up on June 2nd, the day of our first open house!). The organization also raises funds for local initiatives like revitalizing its public library, maintaining its community gardens, and hiring architects and lawyers to support new projects or fight against unwanted developments. Throughout the year, different block associations within the neighborhood host their own activities, including lively block parties and plant sales. If you’ve ever wanted to truly get to know your neighbors — beyond using the NextDoor app — Boerum Hill is the place to be.
This unwavering sense of community love and support was sparked in the 1980s, when notable resident Leslie Lewis first moved to the neighborhood with his partner, Miriam, who still lives on the same block as our townhouse at 238 Wyckoff! Mr. Lewis became the president of the volunteer-based 84th Precinct Community Council in 1993, and his impact extended throughout Brooklyn. Throughout his years of living in Boerum Hill, Mr. Lewis liaised between the police and the community and is credited with shaping the community into what it is today. Though Mr. Lewis passed away in 2016, his legacy lives on; the stretch of Wyckoff where the townhouse is located has recently been renamed Leslie Lewis Way in his honor.
238 Wyckoff Street sits in the heart of this intimate, picturesque, and conveniently situated neighborhood. Boerum Hill’s borders are marked by Schermerhorn Street on the north, Warren Street on the south, Court Street to the west, and Fourth Avenue to the east. Multiple train lines are in the vicinity: A, C, G at Hoyt Schermerhorn; Q, B, D, N, R, 2, 3, 4, 5, LIRR at Atlantic Avenue; and F, G at Bergen Street. While much of the area is already landmarked as an historic district, the neighborhood is in the process of expanding its historic district even further. When the proposed expansion takes effect, 238 Wyckoff itself will be on a landmarked block, adding to its already unique and charming appeal.
The sunny brick townhouse at 238 Wyckoff is located on a street lined with 19th century brownstones and their characteristic stooped railings. The house is currently configured as a two-family residence, featuring an upper duplex and a garden studio apartment, but can be converted to a single-family home. With marble fireplaces, pocket doors, and original plaster detailing, the home recalls its historic roots. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the three-bedroom duplex with light. The bright, sun-filled kitchen leads to a private deck and a lush landscaped garden, which features Crape Myrtle and Japanese Maple trees as well as a variety of exotic perennial plants. Greenery is visible through every window this time of year, and a cherry tree greets you outside of the front door on your way in and out of the building.
A number of celebrities and creatives reside in the coveted neighborhood, where locally-owned cafes, shops, and markets are at your fingertips. Our favorite nearby eateries include cafe Building on Bond, Betty Bakery, restaurant Watty & Meg, and food hall DeKalb Market Hall. But living in this neighborhood means more than just pretty streets and a quiet hometown feel; it means joining a community of people who care for and want the best for one another, and are willing to lend a helping hand.
